Nutec Wendy Houses, garden sheds, and dog kennels are revolutionizing solid timber frame structure construction, and Arbor Designs(Pty) are proud to be at the forefront of this development.
Nutec is a trade name of a quality Fibre Cement board manufactured locally to SABS standards.
Fibre Cement boards are made from a mixture of portland cement, silica(fine sand), and organic fibers. The silica provides the strength and hardness, the fibers stop the boards crumbling and the cement binds it all together.
Solid timber frame structures are typically clad in two styles, the Original American Overlap system or the flat sheet method.
With the Original American Overlap system narrow strips of Nutec are placed horizontally on the structure, each strip overlaps the one below (what you would consider to be a traditional looking fascia). This is the best system because it provides better water run off and creates a stronger structure.
The flat sheet method is just what it sounds like- flat sheets of Nutec are cut to the size and shape of the panel, creating a flat wall. In order to provide the strength and support for the sheeting, timber backing is necessary.
Please note- because our Nutec units have upright studs at 300mm centers we can supply Original American Overlap units without timber backing planks. However, you get a much better unit in terms of strength and insulation if a timber backing is fitted. The extra material required to make a Nutec unit makes them more costly than their pure timber counterparts, however, this is more than compensated for by the increased life span of Nutec clad structures.
Nutec boards are naturally dull grey in colour, however, they can be painted in exactly the same way as an outside wall. This means that you can use the exact same paint on your Wendy House, garden shed or dog kennel that you used on the rest of the house. With most quality, acrylic based paint systems you can paint straight onto the board with no preparation.
Good quality Fiber Cement boards, such as Nutec, outlast traditional SA pine timber tenfold. Unfortunately not all Fiber Cement Boards are equal. International suppliers are dumping sub-standard boards on to the South African market. The reduced cost of these boards is tempting to unscrupulous Wendy House manufacturers. They use the boards to make low quality units that are then sold as Nutec clad structures. Although these units will be slightly cheaper than a well constructed high quality unit made with genuine Nutec, it is unlikely that the cost will justify the reduction in life span.
At Arbor Designs (Pty) we know that if you look at our units and then see one that is significantly cheaper you will be tempted by the other unit. It may be genuine, but before committing you need to remember that you are investing in a structure that needs to give you a significant return in terms of life span. You should therefore make sure that you are convinced of the following:
1. Are the fiber cement boards genuine Nutec?
2. Are the boards adequately supported by both the frame and the backing timber?
3. Are they using quality hardwood frames (think about it- what is the point in having cladding that lasts a life time if the frame is gone in a few years)?
After asking the other supplier these questions and then comparing their product to ours we are certain you will come back to us. We pride ourselves on producing the highest quality units at the best prices, which is why we are South Africa's leading Solid Timber Frame Structure manufacturer.
